Assignment 16: Group Presentation (Draft 2: Final Draft)

Set: Thur Oct 20
Due: Wed Nov 2
This is the homework for half term, you have plenty of time so I expect a good standard of work. This presentation reveals your understanding and knowledge of all of the assignments and theories you have learned about.  You MUST meet up with your group over half term to complete this. (remember not to divide up work entirely, some you must do together including storyboard, shotlist, script etc)
You need to colour code the slides and label with name in corner. If you all contributed – make that clear.

You will receive an individual grade and group grade.  Think of this grade as a pre research and planning grade.

Consider research and planning marks and construction marks

As always, the majority of this presentation should be annotated VISUALS (pictures and diagrams) and NOT a lot of writing, remember the recommended PEE/E structure.

GENRE CHOICE:       HORROR            THRILLER            DRAMA            FILM NOIR
(do not collaborate with comedy or action)

Good subgenres/collaborated genres: pyschological, suspense, sci-fi, romance

Structure your powerpoint in this format:

PART A
-Include a title page
-Assignment name and group members, colour code key
-Genre you are doing. (remember you can do subgenres)

PART B
-slide for each person that contains:
-their 3 initial individual ideas
-WWW & EBI of those 3 ideas
-which one is their strongest idea and why?
-which idea has your group taken forward and why? -how are you going to change or develop it from it's initial state

PART C
-why you have chosen this genre (if subgenre then discuss both genres)
-a little bit of information about your genre(s) with examples
-conventions of this/these genre with examples

PART D
-What are some films that you watched and got inspired by? (can take some from genre partner project) (these films should relate to your chosen genre)
-what specifically was inspirational to you? (use print screens for this)

PART E
-What is your chosen theme for your opening sequence?  (example = addiction, conflict, obsession, etc.)
-show a brainstorm of ideas for your opening sequence (you need to show at least 3 different ideas with brainstorms)
-identify the main idea you have chosen and explain why this is the best one

PART F
-complete in depth research of the topic and/or theme that you have chosen to do, this research should be presented in a clear yet informative way. It should show you have knowledge and insight into this topic.  (example you can’t make an opening sequence about eating disorders without knowing and understanding the disorder)
-research can include written text, photographs, video interviews, etc Try to explore different platforms

PART G
-what are the conventions of your genre (if subgenre then must do both) – put in a clear chart
-what conventions are you USING? Provide evidence: how are you going to do this?
-what conventions are you DEVELOPING? Provide evidence: how are you going to do this?
-what conventions are you CHALLENGING? Provide evidence: how are you going to do this?

PART H
-Who are the actors and characters (try not to have more than 3 characters because it is unreliable) 1-2 is best
-what do the characters represent? (think of stereotypes)  consider how mise-en-scene (costume/prop/make-up/body language/gesture etc) represent those characters

PART I
-locations and settings: you should have a variety of REAL pictures of these to show you have planned this. Try to get a range of angles of these locations

PART J
-How are you going to create enigma in your opening sequence? (in other words: what are you going to do at the end of your opening sequence for the audience to make them want to watch the rest of the film?  (consider genre and it's purpose: example: thriller = create tension and climax at the end, drama = introduce a character and provide an introduction to story)

PART K
-In 5 brief bullet points, what will happen in the whole film (on 1 or 2 ideas)
-In 5 brief bullet points, what will happen in the opening sequence (on 1 or 2 ideas)
(remember an opening sequence is an introduction, don't give away too much and you should create enigma)

PART L
-complete a full storyboard for your opening sequence (remember EVERY SHOT)
(remember all the filming techniques – 180 rule, camera shots, movement, angles, composition, editing techniques, pace etc.)
-when storyboard complete, complete a full shotlist for your opening sequence (remember EVERY SHOT and use chart for this)

PART M
-complete a full script for your opening sequence using the correct format

PART N
-How are you applying the theories of TORODOV? If you are no then you must explain why and why you are not applying his theory.

PART O
-How are you applying the theories of PROP? If you are no then you must explain why and why you are not applying his theory.

PART P
-How are you applying the theories of STRAUSS? If you are no then you must explain why and why you are not applying his theory.

PART Q
-who is your target audience? (age, gender, hobbies, interests, lifestyle, location, social class etc)
-get feedback from your target audience about your ideas and show the results
-complete questionnaires from your target audience about your ideas or details of your ideas
-could take photographs of these interviews to document the process
-could complete video interviews with your target audience instead of written component - could even use this in documentary
-how are you going to make an documentary which is interesting to your target audience? (through FORM and CONVENTIONS)

PART R
-what film distribution company would you use and why

PART S
-What would your film be rated and how are you meeting the BBFC standards?

PART T
-describe with evidence, the style of titling and credits – THESE NEED TO BE IN YOUR STORYBOARD!

PART U
-music and sounds: remember it is either from copyright free source or made yourself in Garageband)

PART V (optional extension)
-consideration of evaluation questions (that you can answer)

Film club

It seems more people are willing to come to lunch.

What I am going to do is if you come on lunch then I will show the video every lunch until it is over. Example: if you watched Freedom Writers today, I will show it again next WED (drama day) and the following Wed until it is complete.

The same applies to afterschool.

This will be better for everyone so you can choose which is more suitable for you: lunch or afterschool.

Remember you can borrow films = £2 deposit and signature!
:)

Notes for Films (in class and film club)

Notes for Films (in class and film club)

We will watch a range of films in class (not the whole film because of time) and films in film club.  Part of your grade is to prove that you have watched a variety of films and taken various things from those films to show that you have been inspired.

It could be from any of these elements and you should make notes of these things when watching the films:

-genre of the film

-conventions of the genre in the film

-themes/concepts in the film

-characters (types and stereotypes)  and the representation of characters in the film

-details, structure or style of the opening sequence

-anything about the filmmaking (construction): camera shots, angles, pace, music/sounds, special effects

-inspirational scenes

-credits = font style, colour, size, animation

-narrative structure (consider narrative theories)

-something about the plot of film (remember this should be the last thing you consider – it should focus on the filmmaking aspect, not plot)

ASSIGNMENT 15: NARRATIVE & FILM THEORY Research Assignment:

Set: Tues Oct 11
Due: Thur Oct 20

Task: to complete a research presentation on Narrative & Film Theorists. This is to be completed in one single powerpoint (or prezi) which 4 sections (A, B, C & D)

Information: Narrative Explained
It is important to tell the difference between narrative and story
Story = a sequence of events, known correctly as the plot
Narrative = the way those events are put together to be presented to an audience.
Therefore, when analysing a narrative we analyse the construction of the story ie the way it has been put together, not the story itself. All media texts have a narrative, whether they are a six hour TV miniseries or a one paragraph newspaper story or a glossy magazine photograph. All films will have some form of narrative and the way the narrative is presented in different films are presented very differently. There are also theories about how films are structured, constructed and presented to audiences which are various film theories. This assignment is for you to learn these theories and consider how you will incorporate them into your own opening sequence.
Remember to use mostly visuals, not a lot of text:
P: point make a point by putting a clear title and/or subtitle
E: evidence provide an image as evidence to your point
E/E: explanation/ underneath/beside the evidence (image) use bullet points to
Effect explain it further and the effect of it

***YOU CANNOT PLAGARISE OFF THE INTERNET. THIS MEANS COPYING A WORD OR PHRASE FROM ANY SOURCE AND USING IT AS YOUR OWN, IT MUST BE IN YOUR OWN WORDS OR YOU WILL RECEIVE AN AUTOMATIC U GRADE.

PART A Slide 1: Include a title page
Slide 2: Define what narrative is and the different types of narrative in film. You should include some examples of films to support your research about different types of narrative in films.

PART B Tvzetan Todorov (narrative film theorist: narrative structure)
-general info about him
-introduce his narrative theory: (key terms: equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium)
-use 1-3 films to explain his narrative theory and how it is employed in the films, use stills to support

PART C Claude Levi-Strauss (narrative film theorist: narrative conflict)
-general info about him
-introduce his narrative theory: (key terms: binary opposition)
-use 1-3 films to explain his narrative theory and how it is employed in the films, use stills to support

PART D Vladimir Propp (Film theorist: Character types and stereotypes)
-general info about him
-introduce his Character film theory: (key terms: all of the different types of characters and their purpose)
-use 1-3 films to explain his character film theory (use films to explain all of the different types of characters)

PART E 1. Erving Goffman's, (Character theorist)
(extention) 2. John Campbell, Gorden Fletcher, and Anita Greenhill (Modern Character theorists)
3. Jonathan Bishop
-general info about them
-introduce their Character theories: (key terms: all of the different types of characters and their purpose)
-use 1-3 films to explain their character theory (use films to explain all of the different types of characters)

Film Club week of Oct 10

Unfortunately only 1 student in year 12 has attended film club. It is an easy way to up your mark and get inspiration for your ideas. Even if you have seen these you should come again as we have some discussions about various aspects about the filmmaking of the films.

AS AN INCENTIVE I WILL BE PROVIDING SOME TREATS/SNACKS IF YOU COME :)

DRAMA FILM 'Freedom Writers'

A young teacher inspires her class of at-risk students to learn tolerance, apply themselves, and pursue education beyond high school.

This is an excellent film which you could gain insight into representation of characters and themes about poverty, modern racism and the role and influence of quality of education.

THRILLER FILM 'Paranormal Activity'

After a young, middle class couple moves into a suburban 'starter' tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be somehow demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially when they sleep. Or try to.

This is a contemporary film which you could gain insight into handhand/realism filmaking style and nightvision techniques.

MOST SHOULD: be able to analyse at least 2 opening sequences (C grade and below)
SOME COULD: be able to analyse at least 3+ opening sequences (B/A grade and below)

STEP TWO:   Make slides about the following:

1. What genre is this opening sequence and how does it meet conventions of the genre in the opening sequence?

2. You may hyperlink the youtube link if you wish (just the url address, DONT embed on powerpoint)

3. Include stills of the video (print screen) which are labelled to explain your analysis (do this for each element)

YOU WILL NEED 1-5 STILL SHOTS (print screens) per each element listed below!

There are the elements: (1 slide per element)
   Font/Titles
   Camera Shots
   Camera Angle
   Camera Movement
   Sound
   Non-diagetic
   Diagetic
   Special effects
   Transitions
   Editing/pace
   Images
   Denotation
   Connotation
Mise-en-Scene (Character: facial expression, body language, gesture, costume/props/make-up, who/what does the character represent?, lighting, colour and setting)

4. Who is the target audience for this opening sequence?  (remember gender, ethnicity, social class, location/region, interests, etc) Why – how do you know?  You could include pictures of people who would potentially watch this as evidence.

5. How does this opening sequence create enigma? Include images (either print screen or other images) as evidence.

6. Post the presentation on your blog

7. Embed the youtube video underneath the powerpoint presentation and write which slide it belongs to - example below:

This is my presentation where I have analysied ___ (number of) opening sequences:
